Measuring Your Driveshaft the Right Way

Three measurements are all we need to build an exact replacement. Always measure with the vehicle's weight on the suspension β€” never with the axle hanging.

TRANS / T-CASE DIFFERENTIAL A β€” center to center of U-joints B β€” transmission seal to center of rear U-joint C β€” slip yoke Measure with suspension loaded (vehicle on its wheels). Accuracy: 1/16".
  • A β€” Center to center: from the center of the front U-joint to the center of the rear U-joint. This is the number that defines your kit length.
  • B β€” Seal to rear joint: from the transmission/transfer case seal to the center of the rear U-joint, with the slip yoke pushed in and pulled out about 1".
  • C β€” Slip yoke: spline count and shaft diameter at the transmission (GM 27/32, Ford 28/31, Mopar 30).
  • Series: measure the U-joint bearing cap diameter (1.188" or 1.375") and cap-to-cap width β€” or just send us a photo.

If you're not sure, drive in. Measuring takes us 5 minutes and it's free.

Is It Really the Driveshaft?

These are the symptoms we hear every day β€” and what usually causes them.

01

Vibration at highway speed

Gets worse the faster you go, not when braking. Usually an out-of-balance shaft, a bent tube or worn U-joints. Fix: rebalance, U-joints or retube.

02

Clunk when shifting into gear

A single knock when going into Drive or Reverse, or on/off the throttle. Worn U-joints, slip yoke play or a loose flange.

03

Squeak or chirp that follows speed

A dry U-joint that has lost its grease. Replace it before it fails β€” a dropped driveshaft can cause serious damage.

04

Shudder on takeoff

On 2-piece shafts, a worn center support bearing. On lifted trucks, a bad operating angle β€” fix with a CV/double-cardan shaft or a pinion-angle correction.
